Outreach in Duff, TN
DUFF, TN (located in rural Appalachia)
Parkway partners with Mission of Hope to help the students, staff, and families of White Oak Elementary. The White Oak community is included as part of nearby Duff, a small town in Campbell County, Tennessee. Of the 125 students at White Oak Elementary, 92% are eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. Families in the White Oak community are trapped- by unemployment and poverty, by drug and alcohol addictions, by hopelessness.
Mission of Hope and Parkway follow the example of Jesus-who met physical needs in order to be able to address spiritual needs. We take not only school supplies and Christmas gifts, but hope...hope in a better future as the result of an education and hope in sharing the love of God.
Mission of Hope provides backpacks and basic school supplies in August, and Christmas gifts in December, for the students. Parkway adds extra school and classroom supplies in August, and staff gifts plus more classroom supplies in December. Parkway also provides clothing to the 32 neediest students as part of the Christmas delivery.
A group of Parkway people deliver these items to the school, where we entertain the students with an assembly program. After the program, we get time to encourage each student as he selects his school supplies or Christmas gifts. In addition, for the past four years, the Parkway Ladies' Ministry has provided a Teacher Appreciation Luncheon in May to honor and encourage the staff.
